Storyline, phenomenology, LR etc

Azamri's Questions:

Dr. Khairuddin,

This is my note for our discussion on Mon, October 23, 2005; 3.30 pm. Please confirm whether the followings are what you meant

(1) Use of storyline
For qualitative research, the use of storyline in intro is recommended. The purpose is to grab readers' interest in the topic of inquiry.Begins with breast cancer and then relate it to SDL. How patient learn to deal with the disease, one of the ways is through SDL. They learn from others and do activities.

(2) Modelling upon Rager's "common themes" RQs
Rager's paraphrasing of research questions ("common themes" approach) is not an instrument that permission need to be sought. It is suffice to acknowledge.

(3)Thematic analysis
Data analysis approach appropriate for my research is thematic analysis, which is actually a common analytical method in qualitative research. My task is to analyse themes based on research questions. The end result of the analysis phase is mind map or model. My task is also to show whether my findings are similar or dissimilar to other contexts of SDL.

(4) Is it classified as phenomenological?
My study a general qualitative study, not phenomenological or case study. The research requires me to go inquire how people go about learning, to u/stand the phenomenon of learning. It is naturalistic inquiry and the perspective is constructivism.

(5) Ontological and epistemological questions
Unless one is to write a methodological paper, the mention of O&E in thesis is not required. The philosophies are however need to be understood for the purpose of CE or Viva.

(6) Literature review
LR is about synthesis of literature, a researcher makes his own categories based on his conceptualisation. No need for me to categorise lit into conceptual and empirical. The most important thing is recency where only literature dated five years back are included. Lit that go beyond that are only acceptable if they are considered classical.
For LR, review lit on SDL, not BC since BC is already discussed in intro. Focus on any type of ailment, then relate it to cancer.

Dr Khairudin's feedback, October 25, 2005:
Good interpretation.
"My task is also to show whether my findings are similar or dissimilar to other contexts of SDL." Yes, also emphasize on SDL for crisis contexts.
"The philosophies are however need to be understood for the purpose of CE or Viva." Understanding research philosophy should not just be restricted for CE and Viva use only. Remember, you are going to get a Doctor of Philosophy. To me that means you understand the philosophical (the beliefs and assumptions) aspects of your field, which for a big part of it involves the search for truth through a systematic inquiry. Hence you are obligated to determine that the knowledge you contribute should have been soundly and appropriately discovered.
"LR is about synthesis of literature...." Yes, you need to make connections on various streams of work within your area of concern. Good luck.
